This year our annual golf weekend found St Stephen’s Golf Society members in exotic Essex and for the first time at Stoke by Nayland golf complex. 2 pristine courses, friendly staff and great food made for a memorable weekends golf.
This year the organisers opted for a ‘Ryder Cup’ style format playing the Gainsborough (Fri/Sun) and Constable (Sat) courses. The 2 teams had already been selected from the pool of 20 attendees by skippers Andy Oxberry (red) and Karl Robson (blue)
Fridays “greensomes” pairs (Gainsborough) was emphatically won by red team Gareth Venables and Den Turner with a unassailable 43 points beating fellow reds Pat Dawkins and Simon Fowler on 39 points but it was the blue team that took the match points 3 and 2 plus 3 bonus points for birdies from Andy Ransley
Match results: Blues 3, Reds 2 (bonus points (4 blues / 3 reds)
Saturday “fourballs” pairs (Constable) was a much closer day with with The reds closing the gap thanks to Mark Vinter (40 points and an eagle 2 bonus points) and Simon Holmes (34 points) combined 74 points. Reds Ian Horsham also added to the match with 3 birdies (3 bonus points) but despite losing the day 3 and 2 the blues held onto their narrow lead with one point thanks to another birdie haul by Andy Ransley (4 bonus points)

Sunday “singles” (Gainsborough) turned out to be a red-wash with 7 reds scoring 30+ points (including a 2 point eagle by Simon Holmes) winning all 5 matches plus 6 bonus points. A great team effort to overhaul the more experienced and talented blue team.
