Five Lakes August 18

The clubs second weekend trip took 8 society members to sunny Five Lakes in Essex, with superb accommodation and 2 challenging courses – Lakes and Links scores varied over the weekend. The Links course appeared to be the tamer but thick rough punished any wayward strike. The Lakes also took no prisoners with water hazards on may holes.

Weekend organisers Mike Barham and Nigel Stevenson discuss tactics on the 1st Tee, Links Course @ Five Lakes

Weekend skipper Mike Barham elected to play the 4 matches in the Ryder Cup format: singles, pairs and 4 v 4 using the Stableford points for overall winners. The last match on The Links course proved critical with the lower handicap players struggling to manage the unforgiving areas of rough.

Team UK inc skipper Kev Mullins, Dave Gregory, Mike Barham and Nigel Stevenson won the team prize with some steady, well managed golf. Overall weekend winner was Alex ‘lucky’ McBeth (20) with Kev ‘bandit’ Mullins (30) taking second.

A big thanks to Mike Barham for setting up the weekends golf and the EU team: skipper Mark Vinter, Alex McBeth, Jason and Sam Robson for making up the numbers.
